THE BURON DE LA CHAMBE

THE BURON

The high pastures of Auvergne are scattered with odd little stone houses: burons. They welcomed and protected both man and beast during the summer months when the herds were taken out to pasture, and the milk turned into cheese on site. Most of them date back to the 18th century, but in the last few decades many have fallen into disuse and are disappearing from the landscape, collapsing back into piles of stones.

THE BURON DE LA CHAMBE was rescued from disaster and has found a new purpose: bearing witness to Nature!

Located at 1300 meters altitude, it is easier to reach than the Roman road that runs along the mountain crest. In spring, horses and goats encircle the buron, sometimes deciding to accompany visitors on a hike.

It accommodates up to 10 people. It is illuminated solely by candlelight. One of the two bedrooms, under the protective, cavern-like vault, has an immense bed covered in a cozy sheepskin; it is an invitation to dream.

COMFORT & REFINEMENT

It’s the magic of a buron that has managed to keep its character while wrapping itself in luxury, warmth and refinement...

WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?

The buron is located in the Auvergne Volcanoes National Park across from the Puy Mary mountains - A Grand site de France (Natural Heritage Site), in southern Cantal. The last road crosses the little village Nierevèze, a few miles from the town Saint-Jacques-des-Blâts on route N122. You’ll be able to leave your car here before setting out on foot or by 4x4...

A "base camp" is in order before heading up the mountain!
La Chapellenie, a 13th century house in the historic center of Aurillac, which has been transformed into a B&B, can ease you in to your journey. We can meet you at the airport, and after a first night in our welcoming house full of history, we'll drive you to the buron in a 4X4.
